The fault that wasn't

I thought my Baofeng UV-3R+ had developed a fault today. Whenever I changed channel the rig went into transmit.

Eventually I realized that the VOX was turned on. The clicks from the rotary channel knob were triggering it! Doh! I think I'm getting too dumb for this game.

What is your opinion of the UV03R? I have one on order and I'm looking forward to the day it gets here. But now that it's on it's way, I have started seeing Hams who say, "Don't waste the money>' Would appreciate your thoughts.

Norm,

The UV-3R is the best $50 I've spent on this hobby. It has its faults but they are forgivable at the price. Some people forget what they paid, I think. If you want a small, light HT to carry around in your shirt pocket it's ideal.

What I would say, though, is that quality control is poor. A number of people have received faulty radios and had the hassle of sending them back to Hong Kong for repair at their expense. You can avoid that by buying from a seller in the US but you'll pay more of course. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

I purchased it from Hong Kong based on the advice of my friend, fellow ham Bill Pasternak who is the editor of Amateur Radio Newsline. He has one and has had no trouble. He doesn't like the charger though.

I have my fingers crossed.

Thanks for you info.
