This blog is meant to be about my hobby, amateur radio. Occasionally I have given in to the temptation to blog about some other event that has affected me, or let off steam about some topic that has annoyed me. But as I discovered a few months ago when a couple of the American ham radio blogs I read decided to vent about Obama, health care and other issues that Americans care deeply about, it can be very disconcerting to encounter far off-topic subject matter in a specialist blog, especially if the opinions expressed are ones with which you profoundly disagree. So in recent months I have tried to resist the temptation of controversial posts.
Sometimes I still get the urge to write about these topics, though. So to satisfy that urge I have started a new blog. Its title is One Foot in the Grave; the subtitle is Ramblings of a real-life Victor Meldrew. British readers who have seen the BBC comedy series of the same name will know what to expect from this. Readers from other parts of the world will have to see for themselves, though perhaps much of what I will be writing about won't be of much interest to them anyway since it is going to be mostly about the trials and tribulations of life in the UK.
Nevertheless I hope that a few of you may find it worth following One Foot in the Grave and even telling other people about it.
Sometimes I have off topic issues on my blog. I don't mind if it is not too often. I do have a family blog also, with videos and photos about what we are doing in daily life. But when you have the urge to write about other things you should do that. I bookmarked your other blog. Good luck, 73 paul
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the new blog. I started my Transmission Lines blog with the idea of doing something similar. I haven't done much plugging as I haven't written too much. It seems when I can't find anything to blog about in the world of radio I cannot find anything else to write about either. It appears I am either in the mood and I can find lots to write about or not. It is more about me and less about a lack of subject matter.
ReplyDeleteI often have ideas when I am out and can't write them down, then can't remember. I have just bought (on eBay, where else) a little pocket dictaphone I can carry with me to record those ideas when they happen. It will be handy for logging callsigns on hilltop activations as well, I reckon.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading the new blog.
ReplyDeleteGood Blog Julian,
ReplyDeleteThe problem with this new blog is that it makes sense, is reasonable and states what most people feel.
As such there is nothing one can say except "right on!".
As a fan of 19th century literature I can see the same attitudes expressed in print then, as now.
Life is too complex, too fast paced, employers exploit, employees shirk etc.
But then during that period the pace of change was also accelerating.
The world today is full of inverted standards.
Only a hundred years ago, actors were considered near the bottom of the social pyramid, even to the extent that people like actor Jeremy Brett had to change his name (to the label inside his suit!) to avoid bring shame on his family.
Modern art has become a con game of grifters peddling blank canvasses and piles of rubbish as art. Musical "artists" take other peoples work, cut and past it and pass it off as their own work.
Children listen to angry people swearing on compact disks and think it is music. And high fashion has become wearing your trousers around your knees, developed from the effect of having your belt removed in prison to avoid suicides.
Most western governments are now technocracies - beaurocrats with consultants. The problem is that they are net users of tax, not generators. This is akin to putting an elephant in a chicken shed, not only does it eat all the feed, but tramples the eggs in the process.
There seems to be a societal "end times" feeling in the air, but of course it is really the beginning of a new leaner culture.
I think political correctness, being a product of cheap oil induced euphoria, will be one of the first things to go.
After all, if energy becomes expensive, humans will need to be used. If you have ever seen how they build highways in some Asian countries, you will know what I mean.
73s es good luck with the new bog.
Julian,
ReplyDeleteI like what I have read so far. Even though it is not Amateur Radio related, I have added it to the blogroll!

There is no question that Ham Radio has enough to fill every single blog post you write and every single one I wire, and chances are, they will be totally different. Same token, what's wrong with letting go about something else? Doesn't bother me, what I have read here. I have side stepped jotting down how I feel about the current administration in Washington....but LORD know I have come close. Does Oil Spill ring a bell? Or SB1070? No I won't go there.
ReplyDeleteNice, I like it.
